CORON BAY 2023

Exploring a World of Wrecks off Busuanga Island.

Diving and exploring the shipwrecks in Busuanga Island, Coron, Philippines was an unforgettable adventure that left us in awe of both the natural beauty and historical significance of the underwater world.

As we descended into the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island, We could feel the excitement building up within us. We had heard tales of the magnificent shipwrecks that lay beneath the surface, remnants of World War II battles that had taken place in the area. Now, We had the opportunity to witness this underwater graveyard firsthand.

The first shipwreck we explored was the awe-inspiring Kyokuzan Maru. As we swam closer to the enormous vessel, we were immediately struck by its haunting beauty. Covered in vibrant corals and teeming with marine life, it was a sight to behold. Schools of colorful fish darted in and out of the crevices, while delicate sea fans swayed gently in the current. Swimming through the empty hallways and cargo holds, we couldn't help but imagine the ship's former glory and the dramatic events that led to its demise.

Moving on to the next wreck, the Olympia Maru, We were amazed by the sheer size and complexity of the underwater maze. The ship's structure provided an intricate backdrop for marine life to thrive. Peering through a rusted porthole, We caught a glimpse of a moray eel lazily peering back at me. It was a surreal moment, as if time had stood still in this underwater museum.

The other wreck on our diving itinerary was the majestic Akitsushima, a Japanese seaplane tender. Its massive hull and intact masts rose up from the depths, inviting me to explore its secrets. As we swam alongside the ship, we marveled at the symbiotic relationship between the wreck and the marine life that now called it home. Lionfish and nudibranchs adorned the ship's surfaces, while large groupers and jacks patrolled the surrounding waters.

Each dive revealed a different shipwreck, each with its own story and unique underwater ecosystem. The experience was not only visually captivating but also a poignant reminder of the historical events that had unfolded decades ago.

As we resurfaced from my final dive, we couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness these submerged relics. Busuanga Island had provided us with an extraordinary journey through time and a deeper appreciation for the intricate relationship between nature and history.

Back on land, we shared stories of our adventures with fellow divers, locals, and tourists alike. We exchanged tales of exploration and marveled at the wonders that lay hidden beneath the waves. The shipwrecks of Busuanga Island had left an indelible mark on our soul, and we knew that this underwater paradise would forever hold a special place in our heart.
